Skin Smart Cleansing

With nearly 20 years’ in the skincare industry, I’m still amazed when someone tells me they don’t wash their faces. I prefer the word cleanse, I don’t want it to be associated with something that you do to your car, dog or dishes. Many people have indicated to me that they only use water, witch hazel or alcohol, but mostly plain old water. Now let’s be honest you would never tell your dentist that you don’t use toothpaste, and I’m going to go out on a limb and assume that you use soap or shower gel when bathing. (I once dumped my dentist when I saw him smoking a cigarette). Some things just don’t make sense.

Cleansing is important for many reasons. Each day we are subjected to all types of pollutants and free radicals (those pesky little unstable atoms that can damage cells, causing illness and aging.) Water alone can’t breakdown these daily assaults.

Skin that is not properly cleansed lacks moisture and can appear gray and dull. If you wear makeup it’s even more important because sleeping in your makeup can cause many problems, which will be explored in another post.

OK, I think I’m making a pretty good case, but some of you are not so convinced. You’re probably thinking that your skin will break out or you'll have an allergic reaction. Both could be true, but more than likely the reaction is caused by exposing your skin to something new. Let’s be honest you will get a reaction, not always a negative one.

The truth is, most sensitivities are created not born. Don’t get me wrong, there are legitimate cases of allergic reactions, but most occur because you're exposing your skin to something new. It may take a few weeks for your skin to adjust.

Picking the right product can be overwhelming with hundreds to choose from. If you are not accustomed to cleansing the best way is to start simple, no bar soap, as it can be extremely drying. To start off I recommend cleansing both morning and evening with Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser along with the Moisturizing Cream or Lotion. Once the skin adjusts you can explore adding other products (toners, scrubs, masks, etc.).
